This is a quick script snippet from Chapter 1 of the upcoming Ononokin book entitled The Kidnapped Prince. This is how we get moving on things. Think of it as kind of an easy way to ease into writing the story. Much of the lines below will likely get altered, expanded, or outright deleted. Sometimes, though, they stay verbatim. It all depends on how things sound when descriptions get integrated.

You’d be surprised at how a short script like this can turn into 10-20 pages in a book. This one probably will be on the shorter side since it’s the start, but it’s pretty amazing how a little snippet like this grows when you add in description, action, and dialog tags. Kind of cool!

Finally, please note that I don’t edit for typos/grammar in scripts, so you may see a few wacky things here and there. 😉

BLAZE AND PILK ARE WAITING FOR PRINCE JACK NUBBINS AT A FORK IN THE ROAD IN THE UPPERWORLD LAND OF KESPER’S. BLAZE IS A DARK ELF AND PILK IS AN OGRE. PRINCE JACK IS A HUMAN.

PILK
When him coming?

BLAZE
Should be any time now, Pilk. Just keep your wits about you.

PILK
My whats?

BLAZE
Wits.

PILK
What are dem?

BLAZE
Just pay attention so that nothing gets past us. We have to be on our toes at all times or something could go wrong. You wouldn’t want anything to go wrong, would you?

PILK
Nope.

BLAZE
Exactly, so we have to keep our eyes peeled.

PILK
I don’t want to do dat!

BLAZE
That was a metaphor, Pilk. I didn’t mean it literally.

PILK
Oh.

BLAZE
You see, when you don’t keep your mind in the game…

PILK
What game?

BLAZE
…you end up getting caught off guard. I’m always focused, though, so this never happens to me.

There is the sound of a cracking stick and Blaze jumps and spins to see two of an underworld boss’s (the boss named “Kleeshay”) henchmen, Gespo and Henrik. Gespo is a Dark Dwarf and Henrik is a Dark Halfling.

BLAZE
Damn.

GESPO
Well, well, well. What have we got here, Henrik?

HENRIK
Looks like a couple of bad eggs, Gespo.

PILK
We not eggs. We’s people.

HENRIK
No, I just meant that you look like you’re up to no good.

PILK
Oh, yeah. Dat true, ain’t it, Blaze?

BLAZE
Shut up, Pilk.

GESPO
Here to kidnap the prince, I’m guessin’?

PILK
Yep.

BLAZE
Shut up, Pilk!

GESPO
Well, that’s too bad. Tell ’em why it’s too bad, Henrik.

HENRIK
‘Cause we’s here to kidnap the prince.

PILK
So you working wif us, den?

GESPO
No, ya flabby Ogre. We’re takin’ you out so we get to him instead.

PILK
Oh.

BLAZE
Ha ha ha

HENRIK
What’s so funny?

BLAZE
Your audacity, that’s what. Do you honestly believe that a Dark Halfling and a Dark Dwarf can defeat a Dark Elf and an Ogre.

GESPO
We don’t have to defeat the Ogre. Ain’t that right, Henrik.

HENRIK
Not this particular one, Gespo.

GESPO
Exactly.

BLAZE
Is that so?

PILK
Dey are right, Blaze. You know I don’t like violins.

GESPO
You don’t like violins?

HENRIK
Not a fan of the music, eh?

BLAZE
He means violence. As in roughing you two up.

PILK
Yep, what him said. I does like music, doh. Specially pretty songs about flowers and sunshine.

BLAZE
Shut up, Pilk.

GESPO
You know what comes next, Elf.

BLAZE
(drops his shoulders)
Yes, but it’s wholly unnecessary.

HENRIK
Probably, but it’s tradition so we have to do it.

PILK
What dey talkin’ bout?

BLAZE
They have to thump us on the head with clubs so that we get knocked out.

PILK
Dats gonna hurt.

BLAZE
Well, we could thump them first if you weren’t such a chicken.

PILK
I not a chicken. I an Ogre.

BLAZE
I mean if you weren’t afraid to fight, you clay brick.

PILK
Oh, dat. I not afraid. I just not like hurtin’ people.

BLAZE
Even if they’re going to hurt you first?

PILK
Okay, maybe I *are* a duck, den.

BLAZE
Chicken.

PILK
Right, dat fing.

Thump. Thump.

GESPO
Amazing that Kwap manages to maintain his position as Kingpin with idiots like these as henchmen.

HENRIK
You said it.

GESPO
Shhh…here’s comes someone.

They push back into the trees as a sound of someone whistling gets closer. Right as the man turns into the light and looks down at the fallen Ogre and Elf, Gespo jumps out from behind him and THUMP.

GESPO
Got him.

HENRIK
Let’s get out of here.
