As you know, my wife (Lorelei) and I have worked on the “South Lane Detective Agency” series together. These are just short stories that we worked on because they were fun. There are still a few more to do before we’re finished with that series, but it’s honestly lagging a bit.
Anyhoo, after seeing how successful the Ian Dex series has been, Lorelei said that she’d like to work with me on one of those puppies. So we created the “Piper & Payne Supernatural Thrillers” series. It’s just getting going, but it’s shaping up to be a lot of fun.
The basic idea is that Piper Shaw is a “Retriever.” No, not a dog… She’s a cop who works for the Labyrinth Security Council. The Labyrinth is the name that the Supernaturals call their alternate reality. It’s basically where nearly all supers live. However, supers are allowed to live topside (or in the overworld) where the normals live. But there are rules to living up there. You have to come back once a month for conditioning so that you don’t end up doing naughty things to the normals. For example, nobody wants vampires going on a rampage, biting normals like it’s nothing, so they have to come back to get a check up, a psyche eval, an updated blood integration, and so on. Once they’re checked out, they can return.
The problem is that some of them don’t return on time (or at all), and that’s when a retriever is sent. Someone like Piper Shaw.
But she’s recently been teamed up with a new partner. His name is Reaper Payne, and he’s an ex-Reaper. Yes, I’m talking about the dudes who walk around with the scythe and the hood, ferrying the dead to the “other side.” He broke a cardinal rule of the Reaper Code and he was sentenced to 100 years living among the supers and normals. Since he was essentially retrieving the dead, it only made sense for him to retrieve supers who haven’t returned from topside on schedule.
There are a number of stories planned already, but here’s a teaser of the first cover! 😉
Estimated time of arrival is early 2018!
